How to Start a Profitable Beauty Blog
This post contains affiliate links. Please read my disclosure for more info.
I used to be one of those people who would spend time online wasting time. I would be on Facebook and other social media platforms. There came a time when I got tired of it so I asked myself why would I waste half of my day online looking at people’s pictures and videos and that if there was a way of making money on the internet I would be wealthy by then.
One day I decided to go on Google and type “how to make money online”. I was surprised at how ignorant I have been. People especially stay at home moms like me were making big bucks with their lap tops. I got interested especially with blogger moms. I started researching, that was 2011 if I remember well. All the information was too much to contain. I haven’t stopped since then ladies and so I decided to share what I have learnt. That is how I started blogging.
Even though at times it was so confusing for me, I felt the little that I know I would create my own blog and pass out the information I had about “making money online” and then have the second blog that would be blogging about my passion, “make up, beauty and nails”. I feel like I have learnt a lot these past few years, so I created this guide to help you start your dream blog.
Things you Need to Know Before you Start
Blogging is Not Only for Techies.
Don’t think that blogging is too technical and that you might not have what it takes to create your blog and let alone manage it. Everyone has a creative and technical side of their own. All you have to do is “do it”, you will be surprised at the outcome.
Work with Your Own Pace.
I went ahead and started blogging with free blogger platforms. I started with the free version of wordpress(wordpress.com) and then blogger. It took me months to get the hang of it. I was doing things slowly trying to learn at the same time. The more I researched and became all hands on, the more I got good at it.
Blogging is Worth it.
Blogging takes time, patience and effort, so if you are to blog make sure it is the topic that you are passionate about. Time spent on blogging will in the long run make you money. This is called passive income. The money accumulates with time thus blogging is really worth it. Besides money, you will answer somebody out there’s question.
Blogging can Help Supplement Family Income.
There are so many mommy bloggers who make $1k + per month. Blogging really does earn you money if you know how to go about it.
Blogging gives you Power over your Blog/Business.
It empowers you and gives you the confidence to be who you are, share everything that you like at anytime any place. You have power over the designs, colors, words etc.
You can Influence and Help People.
When you create and post great content, you become an inspiration, earn respect, trust, and support of like minded people. You will even feel great that you helped out somebody out there.
Creating a website or blog is not only for the Graphic Designers, Website Designers or the computer literate. The more you practice the more you learn. Here is the basic guide on how to create your own blog or website even if you are not technical. For the step by step guide on how to build your own blog please click here.
Register a Domain Name
First you will need to get a domain name which is the name and the address to your blog. It is also called URL (www.yourblog.com).Your blog name should sound unique and understandable, whether it is a personal, business site or a blog. If you can, please keep it as short as possible. A .com is better than a .net, .org, etc. as it is very popular you could pick a domain name like this: “howtocook.com”. You can get it from namecheap.com, BlueHost.com, HostGator.com, GoDaddy.com etc. Here is how the sign up page for BlueHost looks like:
For your blog to be seen on the web, it should be hosted on the internet. Your web host allows you to store your blog contents on their archives/servers. You should choose a hosting service after you are done choosing your domain name and registering it. For the step by step guide on how to choose your web hosting please click here.
What to Consider when Looking for a Web Hosting Company
The site builder should come with an automatic installer so you do not need to install the software by yourself.
Good customer service and reliability.
The number of templates included.
The disk space provided.
There are so many choices of web host companies that a newbie may choose from. Most of them offer similar services but for different price range. I will talk about a couple of the ones that I recommend in a bit starting with free ones. You can definitely use these free platforms when you’re just thinking of blogging for fun and not to earn from it. Below are a few free hosting websites;
There are more out there, but these are the few that I have used before except for squarespace. If you’re blogging for money, my recommendation will be that you buy for your blog a self hosted site.
Why do you Need a Self Hosted Site?
If you host in free platforms you do not have control over the blog you call your own. They can be taken down at any time because you do not own the blog.
You have limitation to only a few free themes and designs with a free platform.
Free blog hosting means no monetization. I was accepted to Google AdSense years after I moved from free blogger to wordpress.org. Google AdSense finally accepted my blog after I moved to BlueHost. Most advertisers and brands feel that blogs hosted with free platforms are not professionally looking nor for professions.
If you truly want to make money with your blog, take it like it’s a business. Firstly don’t waste time and energy with a free site. Shoot straight to investing in a self hosted blog. You will even make that money and more within no time.
